Wildcat band takes the field Saturday for UIL region competition

The marching band will be going to Dick Bivins stadium for their region performance this Saturday at 5:30. The Canadian high school band director John Zalman said he is very proud of the band’s improvement. “I’m very excited about where were heading and our potential,” Zalman said.

Drum major Myra Herrera said she believes the band is sounding fantastic and will most likely advance.

“I think the band sounds really good, like whenever there’s a big hit section it gives me chills every time.”

The last year the band had the opportunity to advance to state was in 2021-22, and they missed it by a point. This Saturday, if the band receives a Division 1 rating, they will advance to Area marching competition, which is October 28 in Odessa. In the past, the band could only advance to state every other year; however, recent UIL changes mean all schools, regardless of classification (1A, 2A, etc.), are eligible to advance to state every year beginning 2023-2024.
